A Detailed Tour Of “The Sound Of Music” In Salzburg! 🇦🇹
Salzburg is an Austrian city on the border of Germany, with views of the Eastern Alps. This is also where the famed the Sound of Music was filmed! 🎼
The original tour is offered by Panorama Tours, and costs €50 per adult. Expensive, I know, however; totally worth the price. 🇦🇹
Visit the picturesque World Heritage City as well as the beautiful landscapes where many opening scenes were filmed, with a friendly live tour guide!
In fact, Salzburg Panorama Tours were the ones to take the Sound of Music film crew to various locations where the famous movie was shot.
Follow the traces of the Trapp Family and see the original film settings! Just imagine being Julie Andrews, the main lead, playing Maria von Trapp.
The tour starts with Church Mondsee in the City Centre. It reached international fame after Maria & Baron’s wedding sequence was filmed inside.
Next, we make our way to Pegasus Fountain in Mirabell Gardens where “Do Re Mi” was shot with Maria and the kids, winning a string of 5 Academy Awards.
Hellbrunn Palace is also a stone’s throw away; built between 1613 & 1619. It has undergone no style changes & visitors still enjoy original scenery.
One of the main sites from the film is Hellbrunn Palace’s glass gazebo, setting for various love scenes such as Maria & Baron’s first kiss.
Next is Nonnberg Abbey!Unlike the film, Maria wasn’t a nun yet, but only a novice in the abbey’s school. Baron & Maria also married here in real life.
Schloss Leopoldskron is perhaps my favourite! It’s the house where the Trapp Family lived in the film, but is now a luxury hotel called Villa Trapp.
Historic Villa Trapp is the only real gem in the number of movie sets & composed shots of the Trapp home. It was the centre of their family life.
The 22-room building, with its mansard roof & slightly yellow colour makes an elegant impression.
After the family’s financial situation became precarious, Maria rented out rooms for guests. A large room was also converted into a chapel.
It was this holy room where the historic meeting between Maria and Father Franz Wasner took place. Wasner was sent by the bishop to hold the Easter...
...mass in 1936, not knowing that the “Trapp Family Choir” would change his life forever.
Visitors can even stay in the family’s original rooms, including this luxury 70 m2 suite!
Every room is exclusively furnished and maintained in the aura of the period - from 1923 to 1938 - in which the Von Trapp Family lived here.
In the film, the family escapes up and over the mountains; in reality, they opened the garden gate through this room, and took the train to Italy.
Trapp Villa is not a full-service hotel.Staff are welcoming & ever ready to discuss the property’s history.Ask for packages linked to the film’s tour.
Last but not the least, the tour wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Sound of Music World - Museum and Exhibition.
The exhibition reports the family’s migration from Nazi Austria, until they gained a foothold in the States.
Even though the little museum houses only three rooms, the artefacts collected from the Trapps’ Family life are original and in pristine condition.
Maria’s book, “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers”, set the base for their fame. She didn’t grant permission to the first offers from Hollywood...
...for filming. Finally, the German Gloria took up the offer. The film was a big hit in the US.In 2 years, it set itself on the list of all-time greats!
Even today, The Sound of Music is the most successful filming of a Musical, among the top 5 productions in history. & its tour is just as brilliant! 🎶
