Count out four sheets of paper. Fold this section in half. This is called a signature.
1
You will need ten signatures total. Each signature is made up of four sheets of paper.
2
On the top signature, lightly mark one inch points three inches from both ends.
3
Use a pencil to mark each of the signatures, using the marks on the tops signature as a guide.
4
Align one signature about a half inch from the edge of your cardboard to poke holes in the cover.
5
Poke the holes on the second cover by using the first cover as a guide.
6
Use your awl and rubber cutting mat to poke holes in each of the signatures.
7
If you don’t have an awl, try using a pushpin or nail to poke holes.
8
When you have all the holes poked, cut some string and thread your needle. Tie a knot at the end.
9
This is a diagram about how to bind your book. The next slides demonstrate the process.
10
Start with the back cover and the bottom signature, stitching from the inside to the outside.
11
Stitch each hole the same way, stitching up through the bottom cover and wrapping the thread around.
12
Continue stitching until you get to the end of the signature.
13
For the last hole in the signature, after you loop around, return the hole into the next signature.
14
Continue with each of the signatures, always looping around the previous signature’s stitch.
15
When you are going run out of string, simply tie a knot, tuck your thread and retread your needle.
16
Continue stitching your book.
17
When you get to the end of a signature, add the next signature on top and continue stitching.
18
Continue stitching your book.
19
When you get to the last signature, it’s time to sew on the cover.
20
Stitch down through the fort cover, wrapping the string around the stitching on the spine.
21
If you run out of thread simply tie off your string and thread your needle again.
22
Continue stitching your book like so.
23
Continue stitching until you get to the end of the last signature.
24
Tie off your thread and tuck it in like so. Now you have a Coptic Bound Sketchbook!
