Create Your Own Plarn (Plastic + Yarn)!
Have you been saving plastic bags in the closet to do something crafty with? Here it is!
1
-used plastic bags (ideally shopping bags that are NOT biodegradable) -sharp scissors (I use large paper cutting scissors) -measuring tape or ruler
2
Smooth out the bags. Flatten the plastic bags, smoothing out wrinkles and checking for holes.
3
Prepare the bags for cutting. Fold the plastic bags in half, vertically.
4
Fold vertically once more.
5
Use the scissors to cut horizontally across one folded bag at a time just under the handles. Discard the handle section of each bag.
6
Use the scissors to cut strips that are approximately 1 to 1 1/2 inches thick.
7
There is no need to measure or be precise, but you can use a tape measure or ruler to get a general idea of how thick each strip should be.
8
You will end up with a pile of plastic circles. Discard the bottom seam of the bags.
9
Knot the plastic circles together. First, overlap two plastic circles.
10
Pull one end of the bottom circle over the other.
11
and insert it into itself. Pull gently.
12
Continue to pull gently to tighten into a knot.
13
Take care to not overstretch the plastic. Continue connecting one circle at a time in this manner, creating a two-ply plastic yarn that is knotted.
14
Beginning at one end, wind the plarn into a ball. Now, it’s ready to use. What are you going to make?
15
So many possibilities!
