Easy Nilla Wafer Banana Pudding Trifle is a dessert with a Southern soul. Everybody’s Momma makes this pudding!

To a saucepan, add 3 cups 2% milk, 3 eggs, 3/4 cups sugar, and 1/3 cup flour and whisk over medium low heat until mixture thickens, 15 to 20 minutes.

Cut in 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter for smoothness and sheen and 2 teaspoons of banana extract for flavor. Shhh, I add 3!

Prepare a shallow baking pan with ice water. Place the hot saucepan of custard into the ice bath and whisk occasionally. Mixture will further thicken.

While the custard cools, line a pretty trifle dish or glass bowl with Mini Nilla Wafers. They needn’t be perfect, they just need to cover.

Add 1/4 cup lemon juice to a bowl. Peel and slice 5 ripe bananas into the bowl, slicing 1/4-inch slices. Use your hands to mix and coat the slices.

Custard time! Pour in enough cooled custard to cover the wafers. Use a rubber spatula and a light touch to smooth out the custard. Top with bananas.

Make a pretty border using Nilla Wafers by lining the outside of the trifle bowl. Place additional banana slices behind them to fill in and secure.

Add a layer of whipped topping. I use Cool Whip because it tastes great and withstands the heavier layers above it. Use the spatula to smooth out.

And REPEAT! Wafers, custard, pretty border of banana slices this time, and smooth it all out.

Almost done, finish out the banana slices and load up the remaining whipped topping. Crumble some Nillas for pizazz!

Really take your time with the layers. Try not to allow any one layer to touch the sides until you push it with the spatula.

This way, you have control over the “pretty” which will be visible in the finished trifle. Each layer should be defined but loose.
