How To: Changing Colors And Carrying Yarn Vertically
This tutorial shows how I like to change colors and carry them vertically. US dc stitches are shown.
Make slip knot, ch amount for color A. For the pattern you are following, change yarn color one ch before total sts needed in the section.
1
Pull through color B as next ch and cont.
2
Pull through color C as and cont. As the next row will be a dc row, I added a ch 2 at the end of the base ch for the turning ch.
3
Start beginning row instructions. Making sure to place the last st in color C into the last ch in color C. Complete dc st.
4
Yarn over with color B, and work next dc into first color B ch.
5
Work into each color B ch across.
6
Yo with color A and finish off row. So many yarn strands at the beginning! Pay attention to what you are grabbing and where your sts are going.
7
Turn. Work across as normal until just before last dc in color. Yo and place hook under the “v” st that is just under the top of the dc. Work dc st.
8
After last dc in color is made, drop yarn behind project, cinch tight loose ch of next color, yo next color and dc in each st across.
9
Again, showing where to work the last dc in current color, place hook under the “v” st that is just under the top of the dc. Work dc as normal.
10
After last dc in color is made, drop yarn behind project, cinch tight loose ch of next color, yo next color and dc in each st across.
11
The next two clips are showing color changes on LAST row only. This ensures a clean change and is the most common way of switching yarn colors.
On last dc of current working color, you will work the dc st until just before the last yo.
12
Tighten the top of dc from the row below, and then pull up next color yarn, yo and finish last pull through of the dc st.
13
What the finished result looks like! Tighten up anything that needs it and weave in ends.
