How To Cook Barley
You will need either 1 cup pearl or hulled barley, 3 cups water (or broth) and 1 pinch salt.

Rinse the barley with cool water in a mesh strainer.

Add the barley and water (or broth) to a saucepan.

Add a pinch of salt.

Bring to a boil over high heat (keep an eye on it, as it will start to foam up quickly once boiling).

Turn the heat to low for a gentle simmer and cover. Cook pearl barley for at least 25 mins. Then check every 5 minutes for doneness.

Cook hulled barley for at least 40 mins. Add more water or broth if it becomes dry. Cooked barley will be chewy and soft.

Remove from heat. Let stand, covered, for 10 minutes. If there is water left, drain it.

Fluff and serve!

You can add rinsed barley directly to soup along with the other ingredients.

It will have a slightly creamy consistency from the starch.

For a more clear soup, cook the barley separately, rinse in a strainer and add to the soup towards the end.
