How To Crochet The Foundation Double Crochet (fdc)
A foundation double crochet (fdc) row can be worked in place of any "base chain + row of double crochet sts." And it's much more stretchy!
Ch 3. (This ch-3 will count as one double crochet in your stitch count.)
Yarn over, insert hook through 2 loops of first chain and pull up a loop. [3 loops on hook]
Ch 1. This chain replaces the one you would make if you started with a regular base chain.
[Yarn over and pull through 2 loops] twice. First foundation double crochet (fdc) made.
Yarn over, insert hook into the "extra" ch 1 made in Step 3. Pull up a loop.
[Yarn over and pull through 2 loops] twice. Second fdc made.
Repeat for the third fdc.
Continue to work fdc stitches until your foundation row is the required length.
All done! Remember, your first ch-3 counts as one stitch!
