How To Crochet The Tunisian Simple Stitch (Tss)
To learn the Tunisian Simple Stitch, we will crochet a small swatch. Before we get started there are a few things to note about Tunisian crochet -》
You will need to use a larger hook size than normal - approx. 2 sizes larger. Here I am using a #4/medium yarn with an 8mm hook.
A row in Tunisian crochet is worked in 2 steps - the Forward Pass (FwP) and the Return Pass (RetP).
Let's get started!
Base chain: Ch 11.
1
Foundation Row Cast On: Rotate chain so that you are looking at the "back bumps". Insert hook into back bump of second ch from hook, pull up a loop.
2
Foundation Row Cast On cont'd: Continue to pull up a loop in each back bump across. [11 loops on hook]
3
You will now "work off" all the loops on the hook - this is the Return Pass (RetP).
Foundation Row RetP: Ch 1 - this is the "end stitch" of the row.
4
Foundation Row RetP cont'd: Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Repeat across until 1 loop remains on hook. RetP complete.
5
Notice the "vertical bars" created in the previous row - you will worn the forward pass of the next row into these vertical bars.
Row 2 FwP: Insert hook into second vertical bar and pull up a loop.
6
Row 2 FwP cont'd: Continue to pull up a loop in each vertical bar across until only the "end stitch" remains.
7
Row 2 FwP cont'd: Insert hook through BOTH loops of the previous "end stitch", yarn over and pull up a loop. FwP complete. [11 loops on hook].
8
Row 2 RetP: Work RetP as per previous row (ch 1 to work the end stitch, then yarn over and pull through 2 loops across).
9
Row 3 FwP: as for Row 2.
10
Row 3 RetP: as for Row 2.
11
Repeat previous row as many times as required.
12
Bind off row: Insert hook into second vertical bar and pull through 2 loops. Repeat across (working end stitch through both loops).
13
Cut yarn and fasten off.
