How To Make Textured Clay Cookie Cutter Ornaments
Tip! Moisturize your hands before working with air dry clay so it won’t stick to your hands.
Condition the clay by kneading it for several minutes. It’s easiest to do small pieces then combine.
1
Roll out the clay to about 1/8-1/4” thickness. Use a glass bottle if you don’t have a rolling pin.
2
Use a vintage crystal bowl or glass to firmly stamp your clay, it doesn’t need to be perfect!
3
Firmly press a cookie cutter into the clay, gently rock side to side to make sure it cuts through.
4
Punch holes for ribbon with a paper straw.
5
Store extra clay properly! Wrap in cling wrap then place in a sealed ziplock bag.
Tip! Bake air dry clay to dry faster. Lay flat on parchment & baking sheet then place in cold oven.
6
Set oven to 200 degrees. Bake for 20 minutes then turn off. Leave clay in until it fully cools.
7
If your ornaments aren’t fully dry flip over and repeat the baking process.
8
If the edges are a little rough, lightly sand with fine grit sand paper.
9
Time to paint! I like to paint the backs a solid color first.
10
Then paint the front however you’d like! I used metallic and pearlized acrylic paints.
11
You can also use a dry brush technique for more texture.
12
Brush on 1-2 layers of gloss varnish. Again I did the back first, let dry fully, then the front.
13
Add a ribbon loop so your ornaments can hang. My ribbon is 12” long.
14
Your ornaments are ready! Hang on the tree, give as gifts, or decorate holiday packages 🎁
