How to Weave for Beginners Using a DIY Cardboard Loom
Follow my earlier tutorial to DIY a cardboard loom. To make a coaster the loom is about 4.5” x 7.5”.
1
We’ll be using a large darning needle.
Cut yarn about 4-6 feet and thread your needle.
2
Tie the end of your yarn to one warp thread (vertical threads). Now we’ll weave the weft (horizontal threads).
3
Weave your needle under, over, under, over, etc. then pull gently.
4
Don’t pull too tight, you want to keep the edges as straight as possible.
Finish weaving that row.
5
My last row ended going under, so I need to start this row by going over.
6
Use a fork to very gently push down your yarn.
7
Keep going until you only have a few inches of yarn left!
8
Tie the end of your yarn to the last warp thread.
9
Tie on your next fiber. This could be more yarn, or experiment with texture by using fabric strips.
10
When you start a new row, double check you are weaving opposite to the previous row. Wherever you went over, now go under.
11
Continue weaving, switching colors and fibers as often as you’d like.
12
Tie off your last end when the weaving is as long as you want it.
13
Carefully cut your warp threads off the loom, leaving them as long as possible.
14
Cut the other side. The warp threads should be at least an inch long (mine are a bit too short).
15
Double knot two warp threads together. Continue doing this along both edges. If you have three threads left on one end, tie all three together.
16
Trim the warp threads. Mine are about 1/4”.
17
If you used fabric, trim the ends to the length you like.
18
Gently hot glue your weft ends to the back.
19
Trim the ends then your weaving is ready!

What will you weave?
