Making A Coil Bowl.
Clay
Start with a small ball of clay. Roll gently in your hands to make a snake.
1
Using the palm of your hand, use a bit of pressure roll into a longer snake.
2
Making a coil can be tricky. When coil is longer, use fingers spread out to apply even pressure.
3
Another way to manage a coil is to drop clay onto board and it will stretch and even out.
4
If coil becomes uneven or too long, cut it in half! Try to keep coils around the same size.
5
Once you have a coil, roll it into itself to create the base of your bowl.
6
Add new coils by layering on top of old ones.
7
Supporting inside wall with one hand, gently smooth clay together to make an even surface.
8
You can continue to smooth, shape & decorate the piece! Try to keep walls even throughout.
9
A great tool to use for smoothing is the back of a spoon! Wait till clay is a little firm to do this

Like anything, this takes practice! It’s a great way to handbuild and make almost any form.
