Part 2: Decorating Your Vessel (AWE group)
When you have the size and shape you want, it’s time to add decoration with clay!
1
You can keep the look of the coils, OR smooth them out. Use a plastic knife to remove the coils.
2
Smooth with your thumb. Always support the inside of the vessel with 4 fingers.
3
Move around the vessel and smooth away the coils in small segments.
4
Make sure that your clay stays firm. Not too wet, not too dry! It should be maleable but strong.
5
Optional: you can smooth the coils on the inside of your vessel if you want.
6
To add a shape on top of your vessel, begin with a flat piece of clay, no thinner than your finger.
7
Draw the shape you want, then cut away the extra clay.
8
To attach your piece, add scratch marks.
9
Add scratch marks where you want your shape to go on your vessel.
10
Use the clay and water mixture (“glue”) to attach your shape. Avoid trapping air bubbles.
11
Use scratch marks around the edge of the shape to make sure it is well attached. Then, smooth again.
12
Create designs, patterns, and textures by pressing into the clay with various tools.
13
You can add as many different textures and shapes as you want!
14
Please carve your name into the bottom of your vessel.
15
Time to paint your vessel! Remember the colors will be much brighter in the end.

23
You can blend and layer different colors!
24
If you make a mistake with paint, simply wipe away with a wet rag.
