With collage, you glue shapes down from the back to the front.
1
Sometimes collages are simple and come together very easily.
2
But sometimes there are many layers and it can be helpful to make a plan!
3
First, sketch your idea for the collage as a whole.
4
Then think about what’s in the very back of your drawing. These shapes will get glued down first.
5
Decide on your middle steps. In this example, the chatting birds get glued down before the truck.
6
Another middle step is the truck and its wheels. Could we have included the clouds in Step 2 or 3?
7
Yes! Of course! We just forgot!😉
8
The last step will be the shapes in the very front. In this one, the windshield and the birds’ eyes.
9
You can make your gluing plan before or after you find and cut out your collage shapes.
10
With a plan made, and all our pieces found and cut, its time to glue! Glue Step 1: background!
11
Middle steps next.
12
More middle steps, continuing to work back to front.
13
Even though you have a plan, leave room for surprises you may find! A bunny makes a good chauffeur!
14
Your plan can be flexible. You may choose to leave some things out. This is called “editing”.
