Today’s collage will use a variety of ORGANIC shapes, similar to ones artist Henri Matisse used.
Start folding a small square of black/colored paper into fourths.
1
Using a pencil or white crayon, draw four ORGANIC SHAPES along one edge of each paper section.
2
Draw more shapes that start and stop on the same edge of the colored paper.
3
Now, carefully cut out your shape pieces. Make sure not to lose any pieces!
4
Set aside the little shapes & carefully glue the original color paper to the background.
5
Without gluing anything, gently re-assemble the cut-outs before the next step.
6
Carefully, “flip” the first shape to the outside perimeter of your center square.
7
If you want, cut smaller organic shapes out of the bigger ones before “flipping” and gluing.
8
Do the same “flipping” method before gluing each of your shapes to the background paper.
9
Take your time to make sure all the shapes are “flipped” properly.
10
The white paper spaces left by the shape cut-outs are called “NEGATIVE SPACES.”
11
The colored paper shapes are called “POSITIVE SPACES”
12
Finally, add some extra line designs to some of the negative spaces for added flair!
