Self-Guided Walk of 10 Historic Squares In Savannah GA
Savannah has 22 historic open squares. Here's a self-guided tour for you to explore nature, architecture, and art. Total distance 2.1 miles (< 1hr).
Start at the large Candler Oak (Forsyth Park). It's one of the oldest living landmarks & stands 54 ft tall. Go south on Abercorn St to Calhoun Square.
Calhoun Square is beautifully landscaped. It's also believed to be haunted due to paranormal activity.

From Calhoun Square, go west on E. Gordon Street to Bull Street, stop at Monterey Square. The oblisque monument honors General Pulaski.

From Monterey Square, continue west on E. Gordon Street to Barnard Street. Stop at Chatham Square for a quiet and picturesque setting.

Walk north thru Chatham Square, cross Taylor St and continue north on Barnard Street until you reach Pulaski Square. The oak trees are amazing.

Walk 3 blocks east on W. Harris to Madison Square. See beautiful Greek Revival, Gothic, and Romanesque homes, many restaurants and shops.

Walk north on Bull St to Chippewa Square (famous for scene of Forrest Gump sitting on a bench facing Bull St; it was moved to a history museum).

Historically, slaves were allowed to gather and hold worship services in some squares because they did not have a church.
Head east on Bull St. to Abercorn, turn left. Continue walking until you reach Oglethorpe Square, 1 of 6 original open squares by the city's founder.

Walk east on State St. 2 blks, and stop at Columbia Square. It is surrounded by beautiful historic homes and has a fountain centerpiece.

Walk south on Habersham St. until you teach Troup Square. Stop to see fascinating monuments and historical markers.

Continue south on Habersham to see one of the most picturesque squares with a Victorian gazebo and Azalea flowers, Whitefield Square.
