What is a sketch?
1
Pencils are great sketching tools made of graphite. Graphite can be lighter (F/H) or darker (B)
2
You can also sketch with other tools like pens, colored pencils and markers
3
Hold your pencil loosely, two or more inches from the tip.
4
Pick a lighter graphite to begin sketching. Sharpen your pencil. Keep your workspace clean.
5
Begin by warming up. Draw loose lines, curves, and scribbles.
6
Experiment with mark making techniques. Keep your wrist loose. Try not to apply much pressure.
7
Vary your lines by making some darker and thicker to create more visual interest.
8
Continue warm up by turning loose lines and curves into shapes like circles, ellipses & squares.
9
Find something to sketch, like something from life, from a picture, or from your imagination.
10
Break down your image into basic shapes.
11
Add thicker & darker lines to connect shapes and define edges
12
Use mark making techniques to add basic details. Erase unnecessary lines.
13
Use a darker graphite pencil to emphasize areas of your image and add shadows.
14
Improve your sketching skills by practicing everyday!
