Warm up by sketching loose lines, curves, and shapes.
1
Pick a subject. Have someone pose for you to sketch from life or take photos.
2
Observe your subject closely. Notice how the body makes lines and how they fit together.
3
Observe horizontal, vertical, parallel & perpendicular lines, simple shapes and forms.
4
Know the body’s proportions. Use the head to measure as you plot body parts.
5
Be sure to check for correct proportions.
6
Practice a few poses by sketching proportions with lines and basic shapes.
7
Connect lines and shapes by creating contour lines (lines that make up the edge of an object)
8
Vary line weight with darker pencils. Use mark making techniques to show light and shadow areas.
9
Add contrast by darkening and thickening shadows and contour lines.
