I put her down, slowly, I don’t say “look!” I don’t dip her hand. I wait.

she notices the bowl

after taking in the feel of the water on hands and knees, she touches the baby

next, she notices the soapy bowl of water and reaches, SHE wants to explore it

she looks up and checks in with me, I smile, we connect, she smiles

she feels confident to continue perhaps, then she touches the water

maybe she likes it because she continues. I’m learning FROM her ABOUT her.

As she explores I add in language but my goal is not to bring attention away from her play

I don’t assume she wants the sponge and hand it to her, I just wait and watch

think about how this may have been different had I interrupted or suggested more?
