Lay out your gelli plate or sheet of plastic, or just a lot of paper.
1
If you only have paper, you can make a painting and press paper onto it, then pull them apart to get a print.
Pour paint onto scrap paper on a flat, even surface. Blend colors by adding 2 or more colors.
2
Roll your brayer over the paint back and forth until it sounds like a cat’s tongue.
3
You may need to roll paint onto more scrap paper if you have a lot of paint.
Once you hear the cat sound, roll the paint onto the plate.
4
Press paper onto your painted plate and rub or press it down.
5
Slowly pull the paper back up, then set it aside to dry.
6
Experiment with the possibilities!
7
You can paint directly onto the plate with a brush.
You can draw on a gelli plate with sharpie.
Let the sharpie dry for 5-10 minutes before adding paint
You have to roll paint over the sharpie before you can print it.
Make your own stencil too! Start with a drawing.
Cut out the drawing.
Tape over the line you cut to get to the drawing.
Then place it on the plate, flatten it, and roll paint over it.
Carefully pull the stencil up before printing.
Make stamps out of random objects by pressing them into the paint,
Then press it onto the plate or paper.
You can make patterns with it!
Think of how you can express parts of your identity that others don’t see or know about.
8
Once the prints are dry, pick your favorite.
9
Bring your print to a mirror with drawing materials.
10
Trace the outline of your face, and try to mimic those curve lines onto the paper.
11
Try to get a silhouette.
Find images from magazines, print images, or draw images that represent the biggest parts of your identity.
12
Cut out the images.
13
Arrange them on top of your silhouette and glue/tape them down when you are happy with it.
14
What does your portrait collage say about your identity?
