When In Greece, These Nine Foods Are A Must!
Steeped in history & lapped by the Mediterranean Sea, Greece is home to some of the finest ingredients in the world. Sample them along with some ouzo!
Taramasalata: this creamy blend of pink or white fish roe, with either a potato or bread base, is best with a drizzle of olive oil or lemon squeeze.
Olives in olive oil: speaking of olive oil, legend says Athena gave an olive tree to Athens, & won its favour. Greek meals always come with olives.
Dolmades: the stuffing often has minced meat with long-grain rice, or vegetarian versions with tomatoes, peppers & courgettes. Each one is different!
Moussaka: variations on moussaka are found throughout the Mediterranean, but the traditional one is based on sautéed aubergine, lamb, tomato & onion.
Grilled meat: Greeks are master of charcoal-grilled meats. Souvlaki, chunks of skewered meat, is served on chopped tomatoes & onions in pita bread.
Fresh fish: fish & calamari are incredibly tasty, grilled whole & drizzled with ladholemono - a lemon & oil dressing. Smaller fish are lightly fried.
Kolokythokeftedes: the fritters are usually made from grated or puréed courgette blended with dill, mint, or other secret spice combinations!
Feta and cheeses: when in Greece, fresh cheese is a joy! Sample fresh feta, a golden graviera, or a fried saganaki. All of them are delicious!
Baklava: Greeks love sweets, often based on olive oil & honey combinations encased in flaky filo pastry. Baklava is one of them - sinfully delicious.
